VSRDA Dogs Benefit from Free Eye Exams

Sirius and Cooper received free eye exams from Nancy Bromberg, a veterinary ophthalmologist at SouthPaws Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Center on May 4, 2009. For the past few years, Dr. Bromberg has been part of this free event, in partnership with AVCO/ Merial. These exams are annually offered to service dogs; to include military dogs, police dogs, SAR dog and therapy dogs.

In past years, Dr. Bromberg has caught several issues requiring attention on several VSRDA dogs!! We thank her for her time and attention to detail.

The event was covered by the Baltimore Sun and there is a news article and video illustrating the exam.

demo boyscouts

David Wyttenbach and his young dog, Sirius Black, educated some Boy Scout Troop 1515 in Alexandria this week on the importance of SAR dogs. These educational demonstrations include facts and a brochure about hiking responsibly in the woods. Boy Scouts are always prepared, and VSRDA adds tidbits about what to do if they are lost in Virginia, and how search & rescue dogs play a role in finding lost people.

Pesticides for Dogs

Controlling fleas and ticks for our search and rescue dogs is an on-going battle! Here is a list of the 3 most common treatments we use, followed by an explination of active ingredients in the pesticides used.

2009 is a BAD year for ticks. The SAR dog, Cooper, had over 100 ticks on him after two long weekends searching in May. (They all died within hours of biting him, but we still ahve to pull them off)
